EL RINCON DE LOS GALOS, the cultivation area is abundant of stone layers, both in sandstone and calcareous clay conglomerate. This territory was known among the nobility of the 14th century as “El Rincón de los Galos” (The Corner of the Gauls). Calcareous clay and sandy soil with low organic matter and low cation-exchange capacity. The grapes ripen early due to the texture of the soil and South orientation. The 2017 vintage was classified as “very good” by DOCa Rioja regulatory council. In Rioja Alta it was mostly dry year, with a severe frost on April 28. Only 2.620 kg was harvested from El Rincon de los Galos vineyard that equivalents to 3.797 kg/ha yield. Early harvest on September 20.
Grape: 100% Tempranillo hand harvested from “El Rincón de los Galos” single vineyard. Planted in goblet system with square formation in 1947. Elevation is 490 m above sea level with a slight incline of 8% and perfect south orientation.
Winemaking: After destemming, the grapes were carefully selected and vatted in a stainless-steel tank where they underwent fermentation for 16 days without post-maceration. A total of 1575 L of wine was made and used to fill seven new 225 L Premium French oak barrels on October 3, 2017, where the wine remained for 18 months without racking.
Bottled on April 14, 2020. After careful selection both in the vineyard and the winery, and low yields we only produced 2.016 bottles. It is one of the few Rioja wines on the market to receive Single Vineyard qualification for its inaugural harvest.
